Gujarat BJP Leaders Condemn Kharge's Remarks, Demand Formal Apology
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has ignited a major political controversy with his recent comments about Gujarat, drawing sharp condemnation from state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The BJP has demanded an immediate apology from the Congress party for what they describe as insulting remarks against the people of Gujarat.
Kharge's Campaign Comments in Kerala Spark Outrage
While campaigning in Kerala on Sunday, Kharge made remarks suggesting that the people of the southern state cannot be misled, unlike those in Gujarat and other states. These comments quickly reached Gujarat's political circles, triggering an immediate and forceful response from BJP leadership.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's Strong Response
Speaking to reporters in Gandhinagar, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed deep offense at Kharge's statements. "The remarks are extremely objectionable and unfortunate," Patel stated firmly. "He (Kharge) has not only insulted 6.5 crore Gujaratis but also hurt the dignity of the holy land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel."
The Chief Minister further suggested that the comments reflect a growing sense of insecurity within the Congress party. "These remarks expose the complete desperation and insecurity in Congress due to the overwhelming public support for the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Patel added, emphasizing what he sees as the Congress party's declining political fortunes.
Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi's DNA Allegation
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi launched an even more aggressive attack on the opposition party. "Anti-Gujarat poison flows in the opposition party's DNA," Sanghavi alleged, using particularly strong language to condemn Kharge's remarks.
Sanghavi elaborated on his criticism, stating: "There can be ideological differences in politics, and that is healthy for democracy. However, insulting all citizens of an entire state crosses every line of decency. This behavior exposes the completely sick mentality that has taken root within the Congress party leadership."
Political Implications and Growing Tensions
The controversy comes at a sensitive political time and highlights the ongoing tensions between India's two major national parties. The BJP's swift and coordinated response demonstrates their determination to defend what they characterize as Gujarat's honor and reputation.
Political observers note that such exchanges are becoming increasingly common as election seasons approach, with parties seeking to position themselves as defenders of regional pride and identity. The demand for an apology creates additional pressure on the Congress leadership to either clarify Kharge's remarks or face continued criticism from their political opponents.
This incident also underscores the broader narrative battle between the parties, with the BJP emphasizing development and regional pride while accusing the Congress of disrespecting states that have shown strong support for the current national leadership.
