Kodagu District Pays Homage to General KS Thimayya on 120th Birth Anniversary
The 120th birth anniversary of the late Padma Bhushan General KS Thimayya was celebrated with great reverence and enthusiasm across Kodagu district on Tuesday. The day was marked by a series of heartfelt tributes, memorial events, and meaningful social service activities, honoring the legacy of one of India's most distinguished army generals.
Floral Tributes and Memorial Ceremonies
Dignitaries gathered at Sunnyside, the birth house of General Thimayya in Madikeri, which now serves as a memorial centre, to offer floral tributes to his portrait. In a coordinated effort, the district administration and the Kannada and culture department organized a commemorative event at the Thimayya Memorial Hall, highlighting his contributions to the nation.
Virajpet MLA and chief minister's legal adviser AS Ponnanna spoke at the event, describing General Thimayya as a disciplined, honest, and inspiring figure. He emphasized that Thimayya's service to the nation and his crucial role in border security should be remembered and celebrated every day, not just on anniversaries.
Community Celebrations and Processions
The Madikeri Kodava Samaj also joined in the celebrations at Gen Thimayya Circle, where MLAs Manthar Gowda and AS Ponnanna offered flowers to Thimayya's statue. A procession later moved to the Madikeri Kodava Samaj Hall, where rich tributes were paid by attendees. Notable speakers included former minister MC Nanaiah, Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy president Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah, and retired Lt. K Mullera Kaverappa, who shared insights into Thimayya's life and legacy.
At General Thimayya Public School, retired Air Marshal Kodandera Nanda Cariappa paid homage to Thimayya's statue, underscoring the educational and inspirational value of such commemorations for younger generations.
Social Service Initiatives
As part of the celebrations organized by the FM Cariappa and Gen Thimayya Foundation, MLA Ponnanna distributed flowers to the residents of Tanal Coorg Ashram and personally served meals to them. Ashram manager Mohammed highlighted that the institution not only provides shelter to vulnerable individuals but also actively supports their rehabilitation and journey towards self-reliance.
The event concluded with felicitations for retired army veterans and the ashram manager, recognizing their ongoing contributions to society. This blend of memorial honors and community service activities made the 120th birth anniversary a fitting tribute to General Thimayya's enduring spirit and values.
