GURGAON: Five personnel of the Uttar Pradesh Police were killed on the spot after their SUV crashed into another vehicle on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway near Dhulawat toll plaza in Nuh district on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place around 10.30 am when the victims, all posted in Jalaun district, were travelling in a Scorpio from the Palwal side. Police said the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead at high speed but lost control, leading to a violent collision.
The impact left the SUV mangled beyond recognition, trapping all five occupants inside. Passersby alerted authorities, following which teams from local police and emergency services rushed to the spot and began a rescue operation that lasted for a considerable time due to the extent of damage.
An officer said the deceased were serving personnel of the Uttar Pradesh Police. “We have informed senior officials in Jalaun and are coordinating to establish the identities of all victims and complete legal formalities,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as traffic slowed down along the busy expressway. The bodies were taken out with difficulty and shifted to a nearby hospital for postmortem examinations. Preliminary investigation points to overspeeding and loss of control during overtaking as the likely cause of the crash. Police have initiated further inquiry to determine the sequence of events and whether any other vehicle’s role contributed to the accident.
Police have urged commuters to exercise caution on high-speed corridors. Authorities were at the spot and removing the vehicle from the spot.
