A tragic incident occurred in Kallakurichi district where a 65-year-old man and his son lost their lives after falling into a 90-foot deep farm well. The accident happened while they were attempting to fix an electric motor pump used for draining water at a village near Tirukoilur.
Details of the Incident
The deceased have been identified as Ayyannar, a farmer from Kattupanaiyur village, and his son A. Vinuganesh, aged 28. According to police, the electric motor pump in Ayyannar's farm well had malfunctioned recently. After getting it repaired, he went to the well with his son on Friday evening to reinstall it.
While they were lowering the pump using a pipe, they lost their balance and slipped into the well. The water level in the well was only about three feet deep, but the fall from such a height caused severe injuries. The victims were unable to climb out of the well.
Rescue Operation
The incident came to light shortly after when a passerby noticed the two men lying motionless inside the well. The passerby alerted the villagers, who in turn informed the Tirukoilur fire and rescue services. A rescue team reached the spot and after a difficult operation, both men were lifted from the depths of the well.
Ayyannar was found dead at the scene. Vinuganesh was rushed to the Tirukoilur Government Hospital by ambulance, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. The bodies have been sent to the Kallakurichi Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
Investigation
The Tirukoilur police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accidental fall. Authorities are looking into whether any safety measures could have prevented the tragedy.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with farm work, especially when dealing with deep wells and heavy equipment. The local community is in mourning, and the family of the deceased is receiving support from neighbors and relatives.
