EC Reviews Security, Border Sealing for Poll-Bound States

Election Commission Intensifies Preparations for Upcoming Polls

The Election Commission of India convened a crucial meeting on Tuesday with top officials from poll-bound states and union territories, as well as twelve neighboring states, to comprehensively review election preparedness. The gathering, held in New Delhi, focused on critical issues such as law and order, expenditure enforcement, and the sealing of borders to ensure peaceful and fair elections.

High-Level Coordination and Security Measures

Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S S Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, the meeting brought together chief secretaries, chief electoral officers, and police chiefs. The EC emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among all stakeholders to address potential challenges during the electoral process.

Special attention was directed towards bordering districts, with a mandate to seal borders effectively to prevent any disruptions in the poll-bound regions of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry. An EC spokesperson stated, "The EC directed all concerned to ensure violence-free, intimidation-free and inducement-free elections."

Focus on Expenditure Enforcement and Law Enforcement

Senior officials from the poll-bound states provided detailed briefings on their preparations, highlighting law and order issues and expenditure enforcement strategies. The meeting also addressed pending concerns with central agencies and neighboring states to streamline efforts.

Key discussion points included:

  • Seizures of illegal cash, liquor, narcotics, and arms
  • Review of expenditure-sensitive constituencies
  • Measures to curb poll inducements and violence

Role of Neighboring States and Central Agencies

Neighboring border states were instructed to take proactive steps to support the poll-bound states and UTs in monitoring and preventing electoral malpractices. This collaborative approach aims to create a secure environment for voters and candidates alike.

Heads of various enforcement agencies, including the CBDT, CBIC, ED, DRI, CEIB, FIU-IND, RBI, IBA, NCB, ICG, BCAS, AAI, Postal Service, CRPF, CISF, BSF, SSB, RPF, ITBP, Indian Coast Guard, and Assam Rifles, were directed to maintain heightened vigilance. Enhanced checks at inter-state check posts and in areas bordering the poll-bound regions are to be implemented to ensure compliance with election guidelines.

The Election Commission's proactive measures underscore its commitment to conducting transparent and orderly elections, with a clear focus on safeguarding the integrity of the democratic process through robust enforcement and inter-state cooperation.
