Election Commission Mandates Immediate Central Forces Deployment in Bengal Poll Areas
The Election Commission of India (EC) on Wednesday issued a firm directive to West Bengal's top police officials, ordering the immediate deployment of central forces in any area where the law-and-order situation deteriorates during the election period. This instruction was delivered during a high-level review meeting focused on poll preparedness in the state.
High-Level Meeting with Police and Election Officials
The crucial meeting was attended by key figures including the Bengal Director General of Police (DGP), the Commissioner of Police for Kolkata, the Additional Director General (Law and Order), the Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and other senior state police officials. Representing the Election Commission were Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal and two special observers appointed by the EC.
Sources present at the meeting revealed that the EC made it explicitly clear that the central paramilitary forces have not been deployed to remain stationed statically at one location. Instead, they are to be mobilized dynamically and swiftly to areas experiencing a breakdown in law and order, ensuring a rapid response to any potential electoral disturbances or violence.
Ensuring Seamless Connectivity for Polling Webcasting
In a parallel development on the same day, the Election Commission also convened a separate meeting with major telecom service providers operating in West Bengal. The primary objective of this engagement was to guarantee seamless and robust network connectivity across all polling areas, contingent upon network availability.
"This election cycle, webcasting will be arranged from all polling booths. To facilitate this, all installed cameras at these booths will be fitted with SIM cards for data transmission," sources familiar with the discussions stated. The telecom operators have been formally instructed to ensure proper and uninterrupted connectivity to support this extensive webcasting initiative, which aims to enhance transparency and monitoring during the voting process.
The EC's dual focus on security through flexible central force deployment and on technological transparency via comprehensive webcasting underscores its comprehensive strategy for conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections in West Bengal.
