Election Commission Official Faces Allegations of Preparing BJP Campaign Material in Viral Video
A significant controversy erupted on Saturday following the circulation of a viral video that allegedly shows an Election Commission official for the Panihati constituency on the outskirts of Kolkata preparing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) campaign material. The incident has prompted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to demand the immediate removal of the official and legal action against him before the upcoming elections.
TMC Lodges Formal Complaint with Chief Electoral Officer
The Trinamool Congress lodged a formal complaint with the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) against sector officer Atanu Chakraborty. In the complaint, TMC accused Chakraborty of violating established norms and compromising the neutrality that is strictly required of all election staff. The complaint specifically cited a video that has been widely circulating on various social media platforms, which purportedly shows Chakraborty arranging BJP flags and pamphlets.
Allegations of Breaching Model Code of Conduct
In a detailed letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer, TMC MP Derek O'Brien alleged that the officer engaged in activities directly linked to the BJP. O'Brien stated that these actions constitute a clear breach of the model code of conduct and other critical provisions that govern the conduct of election personnel. The letter emphasized that such behavior undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
Demands for Urgent Intervention and Legal Proceedings
Seeking urgent intervention from the Election Commission, TMC party functionaries have strongly urged that Atanu Chakraborty be stripped of all his poll duties immediately. Furthermore, they have demanded that strict legal proceedings be initiated against him. The party has argued that his conduct poses a serious threat to the principles of free and fair elections, which are fundamental to a democratic system.
The controversy has intensified political tensions in the region, with the TMC highlighting the incident as evidence of potential bias within the election machinery. The Election Commission is now under pressure to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action to maintain public trust in the electoral process. This development comes at a critical time as political parties gear up for the elections, making the neutrality of election officials a paramount concern.
