Coimbatore: DMK candidate V Senthil Balaji won the Coimbatore South constituency after a closely fought contest, securing victory by a margin of 2,271 votes after 20 rounds of counting. The victory is seen as decisive as Coimbatore has long been an AIADMK stronghold.

DMK leadership moved Senthil Balaji from Karur to Coimbatore district with the aim of strengthening the party's presence and helping it win at least four or five assembly seats in the region. However, the broader outcome appears to have been more complicated, with TVK reportedly emerging victorious in six constituencies, altering expected equations in the district.

BJP Candidate Vanathi Srinivasan Finishes Third

BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan, who had won Coimbatore South constituency in the 2021 election, contested this time from Coimbatore North after the AIADMK reclaimed Coimbatore South and allotted Coimbatore North to the BJP. Her campaign was affected by health issues, as she reportedly fell ill during the election period and was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital. She eventually finished third by securing 49,722 votes. Sources indicated that sections of right-wing organisations and supporters of some BJP leaders did not fully back her campaign on the ground.

BJP Union Minister L Murugan Finishes Second in Avinashi

In another key contest, BJP Union minister of state L Murugan, who contested from the Avinashi SC-reserved constituency in Tirupur district, finished second with 68,688 votes. TVK candidate Kamali won the Avinashi seat. The BJP and its ally AIADMK had campaigned strongly in support of Murugan but were unable to secure a win there.
