MP Durai Vaiko Warns Delimitation Will Cut Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary Clout
Delimitation to Reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliament Representation: MP

MP Durai Vaiko Raises Alarm Over Delimitation Impact on Tamil Nadu

In a significant statement from Trichy, MDMK principal secretary and Trichy MP Durai Vaiko expressed deep concerns on Wednesday regarding the Centre's proposed delimitation exercise. He warned that this move could severely diminish the proportional representation of Tamil Nadu and other southern states in the Parliament, posing a threat to their developmental interests and federal principles.

Proportional Representation Set to Decline

Durai Vaiko highlighted that while the total number of Lok Sabha seats is expected to increase from 543 to 816, the proportional representation of Tamil Nadu is projected to drop from the current 7% to just 5%. This reduction, he argued, would be detrimental to the state's ability to secure special schemes and funds essential for its growth and progress. He emphasized that such a shift could leave Tamil Nadu at a disadvantage in national decision-making processes.

Threats to Federalism and State Autonomy

The MP articulated fears that the delimitation exercise, by boosting the representation of northern states, could empower the Union government to pass bills without adequate consideration for southern interests. "Parliament serves as our shield against cultural and linguistic impositions, but with altered representation, the Union government might push through any legislation it desires. This undermines federalism and places us in grave danger," Durai Vaiko stated. He further accused the BJP-led Centre of potentially using this change to target and deceive non-BJP-ruled states, exacerbating regional disparities.

Punishment for Effective Governance

Durai Vaiko pointed out that southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have historically implemented successful population control measures, leading to economic development and significant contributions to the nation's growth. He lamented that the delimitation exercise appears to penalize these states for their achievements, rather than rewarding their efforts. He called on alliance partners, such as the AIADMK, to oppose the delimitation, suggesting it should have been deferred until after assembly elections to allow for more thorough discussion.

Mixed Views on Parliamentary Reforms

While welcoming the 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a positive step toward gender equality, Durai Vaiko questioned the urgency behind discussing the delimitation bill in Parliament. He urged for a more deliberative approach to ensure that the interests of all states, particularly those in the south, are safeguarded. "The impact on Tamil Nadu could be severe, and Chief Minister M K Stalin has rightly echoed the state's sentiments on this matter," he added, reinforcing the need for collective opposition to protect regional representation.
