Delimitation Bills Set to Transform Electoral Landscape in Telugu States
With the Union government preparing to introduce two significant bills in the current Parliament session—one for constituency delimitation and another to implement women's reservation—speculation is intensifying about a potential increase in assembly and Lok Sabha seats for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This move could dramatically reshape the political dynamics of these states ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Projected Seat Increases for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
If the government's proposals move forward, Telangana could see its assembly seats surge by 50%, rising from the current 119 to 179. Concurrently, Lok Sabha representation would increase from 17 to 26 seats. For Andhra Pradesh, assembly seats might jump from 175 to 263, with Lok Sabha seats expanding from 25 to 38.
Such substantial changes would not only alter seat counts but also redefine the majority thresholds needed to form governments. In Telangana, the majority mark would climb to 90 from the existing 60, while in Andhra Pradesh, it would rise to 132 from the current 88.
Government Outreach and Political Caution
Reports indicate that Union Home Minister Amit Shah briefed NDA partners on Monday night about the government's plans to increase assembly and Lok Sabha seats nationwide. However, Telangana BJP leaders have urged caution, noting that no final numbers have been decided and frameworks are still under consideration.
"It's premature to draw firm conclusions," emphasized a BJP representative, highlighting that discussions are ongoing and subject to further refinement.
Post-Census Considerations and Regional Formulas
Following the upcoming Census, a potential 'north-south formula' might be applied within Telangana. Under this system, districts like Adilabad in the northern region could serve as reference points, with constituencies structured around an average of 1.5 lakh voters each. This approach could lead to a significant increase in assembly seats around Hyderabad, though exact numbers remain unpredictable at this stage.
Revisions to Constituency Linkages
In addition to seat increases, there is active discussion about revising the linkage between assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in Telangana. Currently, each Lok Sabha segment comprises seven assembly seats, but proposals suggest this number could rise to nine, further altering the electoral framework.
Political analysts note that these delimitation moves, combined with women's reservation, could create a more inclusive and representative political environment, though the exact impacts will depend on final implementations and regional adjustments.
