Delhi NCR is experiencing intense heatwave conditions with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the region, warning of severe heatwave conditions over the next two days.
Current Temperature Scenario
The maximum temperature in Delhi's Safdarjung observatory was recorded at 44.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the Palam observatory recorded 46.2 degrees Celsius. Other areas like Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad also reported temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave Impact
The prolonged heatwave has led to an increase in heat-related illnesses. Hospitals in the region have reported a surge in cases of heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related ailments. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during peak hours and stay hydrated.
Possible Relief on the Horizon
According to the IMD, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from April 27. This could bring light rain and thunderstorm activity over parts of North India, including Delhi NCR, providing some relief from the scorching heat.
Weather Forecast for Next Few Days
- April 25-26: Heatwave conditions continue with maximum temperatures around 45-46 degrees Celsius.
- April 27: Possibility of partly cloudy sky with a chance of very light rain or drizzle. Maximum temperature likely to drop to 42 degrees Celsius.
- April 28-29: Cloudy sky with possibility of light rain and thundershowers. Maximum temperature expected to be around 40 degrees Celsius.
Precautionary Measures
The IMD has advised people to avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and keep themselves hydrated. It has also recommended that outdoor work be rescheduled to cooler parts of the day. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions should take extra care.
Government Response
The Delhi government has directed all hospitals to be on high alert and ensure adequate availability of essential medicines and facilities for heat-related illnesses. Schools have been advised to adjust their timings to avoid the peak heat hours. Additionally, the government has set up drinking water kiosks at various locations across the city.
While the heatwave is expected to persist for a few more days, the predicted relief from April 27 onwards will be a welcome change for residents of Delhi NCR and other parts of North India.
