CRPF CoBRA Commando Dies in Tragic Storm Accident in Jharkhand
A CRPF CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) jawan lost his life in a tragic accident early Wednesday morning when a tree fell on him during a severe storm in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district. The incident occurred at the CRPF's 210 Battalion camp located in Babudera village within the dense Saranda forest area, under the jurisdiction of the Jaraikela police station.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Kumar, a commando in his 30s who served with the elite CoBRA unit. According to West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Amit Renu, the accident happened when heavy rain and strong winds uprooted a tree, which then collapsed onto the makeshift camp where Kumar was stationed.
Rakesh Kumar sustained grievous head injuries in the impact. He received initial medical treatment at the scene before being airlifted to Ranchi for advanced care. Tragically, the jawan succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital, despite the urgent evacuation efforts.
Weather Conditions and Operational Challenges
The SP confirmed that inclement weather, including persistent heavy rain and storms over the past several days, has created significant challenges for security forces operating in the region. While these conditions have hindered combing operations, officers emphasized that anti-Naxal operations in the Saranda forest area have not been halted.
This tragic event highlights the perilous conditions faced by security personnel in remote and forested regions, where natural hazards compound the existing risks of their duties.
Recent Context of CoBRA Operations
This incident follows another recent casualty involving a CoBRA jawan. On April 5, a commando from the 205 Battalion was injured in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion in Baliba village, located under the Chotanagra police station limits of West Singhbhum district.
The CoBRA battalions are specialized units of the CRPF, primarily deployed for counter-insurgency and jungle warfare operations, particularly in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas like the Saranda forest.
