CPM to Spotlight Displaced Tribal Families' Plight at Major Delhi Rally

In a significant political move, CPM politburo member Brinda Karat declared on Saturday that the party will bring the dire situation of families displaced by the Pachuara coal mine in Pakur district to the forefront during its upcoming mega rally in New Delhi. The event, scheduled for March 24 at Ramlila Maidan, aims to amplify the voices of those affected by the mining project.

Decades of Neglect and Broken Promises

During her visit to Dumka, Karat emphasized that tribal families displaced by the Pachuara coal mine have endured years of miserable living conditions. She asserted that numerous promises made to these communities remain unfulfilled, leaving them in a state of perpetual hardship. The former Rajya Sabha MP highlighted that the displacement has disproportionately impacted tribals and other marginal groups, who continue to face systemic neglect.

Karat criticized both public and private sector entities involved in coal mining, stating, "Even state-owned public sector companies engaged in coal mining do not lag behind private companies when it comes to denying the legitimate rights of the displaced lot, largely comprising tribals and other marginal communities." This condemnation underscores a broader issue of corporate accountability in resource extraction projects.

Allegations of Unfair Land Acquisition

Karat further alleged that land for the Pachuara coal mine project in Dumka district was acquired without proper prior intimation to the raiyyats (landowners). She referenced a survey conducted by a New Delhi-based agency, which was submitted to the district administrations of Pakur and Dumka, as evidence of the irregularities in the acquisition process. This survey reportedly documents the adverse impacts on local communities, reinforcing the need for urgent intervention.

Jan Sangharsh Rally: A Culmination of Grassroots Mobilization

The March 24 rally, named the Jan Sangharsh Rally, represents the culmination of Jan Sagharsh Yatras organized across various states. These yatras were designed to mobilize public support against what the CPM terms as the Centre's anti-people measures. Key issues to be highlighted at the rally include:

  • The scrapping of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which has affected rural livelihoods.
  • The introduction of new labour codes that critics argue undermine workers' rights.
  • The trade deal with the United States, viewed as detrimental to local economies and sovereignty.

By integrating the plight of displaced tribal families into this broader agenda, the CPM aims to draw national attention to the intersection of environmental justice, tribal rights, and governmental policies. The rally is expected to attract widespread participation from activists, community leaders, and political supporters, making it a pivotal event in the party's campaign against perceived injustices.
