CPM Denies Membership Renewal to Bineesh Kodiyeri

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided not to renew the party membership of Bineesh Kodiyeri, the son of former state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The decision was taken by the CPM Thiruvananthapuram district committee, which rejected Bineesh's request for the fourth time.

Bineesh's membership had been frozen in 2020 following his arrest in a drug-related money laundering case in Bengaluru. He had been a party member since 2001. Despite submitting renewal requests four times, each was turned down by the party leadership.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who was battling cancer, stepped down from the post of party state secretary after Bineesh's arrest in November 2020. The case had put the CPM in a difficult position, forcing Kodiyeri to publicly distance the party from his son's actions.

On Friday, CPM state secretary M V Govindan told reporters that matters like membership renewal are regional issues, which the respective party forums would handle. He declined to comment further on the specific case.

The denial of membership renewal marks a significant development in the party's stance on internal discipline and accountability. Bineesh's repeated attempts to regain membership have been unsuccessful, reflecting the party's strict adherence to its principles.
