Congress Slams Shashi Tharoor for Praising PM Modi

The Congress party on Tuesday took strong exception to its senior leader Shashi Tharoor's remarks expressing admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that such comments were "forceful assertions" that go against the party's stance.

In a statement, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "Somehow we heard forceful assertions from Shashi Tharoor praising the Prime Minister. This is not the position of the Congress party."

Tharoor, while speaking at a book launch event on Monday, had said that he admires PM Modi for his ability to connect with the masses and his strong leadership. The comments triggered a sharp reaction from the Congress, which has been a vocal critic of the Modi government.

Ramesh further added, "Our party has always maintained that the Modi government has failed on multiple fronts, including the economy, unemployment, and social harmony. Any praise for the Prime Minister from a senior party leader is unfortunate and unacceptable."

The Congress also reminded Tharoor of the party's principles and urged him to refrain from making statements that could be construed as supporting the political opposition.

This is not the first time Tharoor has courted controversy with his remarks. He has previously been criticized by his own party for praising aspects of the Modi government's policies.

Political analysts say that the incident highlights the internal tensions within the Congress party, especially as it tries to position itself as a strong opposition ahead of the upcoming elections.
