The Congress party has launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah for remaining silent on the demands of the people of Ladakh for statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The party accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of betraying the aspirations of the Ladakhi people.
Congress's Accusations
In a statement, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that Amit Shah's silence on the issue is a clear indication that the BJP government is not serious about addressing the legitimate concerns of the people of Ladakh. Khera reminded that the Congress has consistently supported the demand for statehood and constitutional safeguards for the region.
The Congress also criticized the BJP for its failure to implement the promises made during the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. At that time, the government had assured that Ladakh would be given adequate protection for its unique culture and identity.
Demands of Ladakh
The people of Ladakh have been demanding statehood and the application of the Sixth Schedule, which provides autonomy to tribal areas through autonomous councils. They argue that these measures are essential to preserve their distinct culture, language, and land rights.
The Congress party has urged the central government to initiate a dialogue with the representatives of Ladakh and take concrete steps to fulfill their demands. The party also called for the restoration of the special status that was revoked in 2019.
Political Reactions
The Congress's criticism comes amid growing discontent in Ladakh over the delay in addressing their demands. Several local organizations and political leaders have expressed frustration with the central government's inaction.
Meanwhile, the BJP has defended its record, stating that the government is committed to the development of Ladakh and has taken several steps to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the region. However, the party has not made any specific commitment on the issue of statehood or the Sixth Schedule.
The Congress's attack on Amit Shah is likely to intensify the political debate over the future of Ladakh, especially as elections approach in the region.
