Congress MP Sounds Alarm Over Rohingya Threats to Indigenous Garo Communities in Meghalaya
In a critical development from Meghalaya, Congress Lok Sabha member from Tura, Saleng A Sangma, has urgently appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for immediate intervention. The plea centers on alarming threats allegedly issued by illegal Rohingya immigrants against the indigenous Garo tribal communities residing in the Garo Hills region of the state.
Escalating Tensions and Security Concerns
In a detailed letter dated March 18, with a copy forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Sangma highlighted a rapidly deteriorating security situation. He emphasized that increasing tensions and violent clashes have erupted between local tribal communities and illegal Rohingya groups. The Congress MP specifically warned that these threats are linked to individuals suspected of having backing from ISIS, raising the stakes significantly.
The situation has become so severe that authorities have already imposed a curfew in the sensitive region. Additionally, the scheduled elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council have been postponed indefinitely, underscoring the gravity of the unrest.
Disturbing Threats and Coercive Actions
Sangma informed the Prime Minister that threatening posters have been plastered across multiple locations in West Garo Hills, including areas like Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Phulbari, and adjoining villages. These posters contain explicit and coercive messaging, directing residents to vacate their land by a defined deadline of 2027. This has instilled widespread fear and insecurity among the local indigenous populations.
"The targeted threats appear designed to create fear among indigenous tribal populations, with potential implications of displacement and social disruption," Sangma wrote in his letter. He described these developments as a "potentially escalating security concern," particularly within the Tura (ST) parliamentary constituency.
Violent Incidents and Retaliatory Actions
The MP cited several violent incidents that have exacerbated the crisis:
- On March 9, a shop belonging to a local resident was destroyed at Chibinang market.
- A statue of Mother Mary was vandalized in an act that has deeply affected religious sentiments and social harmony in the community.
- Recent violence resulted in the deaths of two Garo tribals, with houses set on fire.
- A retaliatory incident reported on March 11 indicates a rapidly worsening situation on the ground.
Sangma warned that the sequence of threats, killings, vandalism, and retaliatory actions poses a clear risk of spiraling into wider communal unrest if not addressed immediately. He stressed the urgent need for central action to secure the region and prevent further escalation.
Call for Immediate Central Intervention
In his appeal, Sangma urged the Centre to move swiftly to stabilize the Garo Hills area. He emphasized that the threats from illegal immigrants, coupled with suspected ISIS connections, require a robust and prompt response from national security agencies. The MP's letter underscores the vulnerability of indigenous communities and the potential for broader social disruption if the situation remains unchecked.
