Congress Ministers Display Unity in Davanagere Campaign
In a show of solidarity, Housing Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan and Mines and Geology Minister SS Mallikarjun joined forces on Sunday to campaign for Congress candidate Samarth Shamanur in Davanagere. This joint effort comes after a period of apparent discord, with Khan's earlier absence from the campaign trail raising eyebrows.
Overcoming Past Grievances for Party Benefit
The ministers held a press conference at Mallikarjun's residence, where they publicly announced their commitment to work together. "We have forgotten the past grievances. We will work together for the party's benefit," they declared. Khan, who had been campaigning in Kerala as a star campaigner for the assembly elections, arrived directly from there to participate in the Davanagere event.
He explained that his hectic poll duties across 10 districts since March 26 had kept him occupied, but he returned following instructions from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. "Following CM Siddaramaiah's instructions, I have come to campaign for the party's candidate Samarth Shamanur," Khan stated.
Addressing Community Concerns and Confusion
Khan acknowledged the confusion that arose from his previous visit to Davangere, where he had assured the Muslim community of advocating for a byelection ticket on their behalf. "When I visited Davangere a few months ago, there was a demand from the Muslim community for a byelection ticket. I had assured them that I would bring it to the high command's attention. This indeed created confusion. It's true that some are dissatisfied because the ticket slipped away," he admitted.
However, he emphasized that there are still four days left before voting, and they are working to resolve any issues. The community has now shifted its focus to seeking an opportunity in the 2028 general elections. "We are a Congress family. We will persuade the discontented legislative council member, Abdul Jabbar," Khan added.
Analyzing Electoral Dynamics and Strategy
Khan provided insights into the electoral landscape, noting that in the 2023 elections for the Davanagere South constituency, there were 13 Muslim candidates from various parties, including SDPI, JD(S), and independents. Their combined votes did not exceed 3,000. "Not all who contest will secure votes. Nevertheless, I will attempt to persuade the Muslim candidates now in the fray to give up. This is a Congress stronghold, and Samarth's victory is certain," he asserted confidently.
Mallikarjun reinforced the message of unity, stating, "Zameer Ahmad and I are friends. We speak informally. There are no differences between us." This public display of camaraderie aims to bolster support for Samarth Shamanur and ensure a cohesive campaign effort in the remaining days before the election.
