Congress Completes Kerala Candidate Selection with Second List Release
Ending a period of uncertainty, the Congress party on Thursday unveiled its second list of 37 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Kerala. This announcement effectively completes the party's selection process for all 95 seats it intends to contest across the state. The move aligns with a clear directive from the party's high command, which mandated that no sitting Members of Parliament be fielded in these crucial state polls.
Key Candidates and Constituency Allocations
The newly released list features several notable names, each assigned to strategic constituencies. Mohammad Shiyas will contest from Kochi, while Sandeep Varrier has been nominated for Trikaripur. In Aranmula, the party has placed its faith in Abin Varkey, and K S Sabarinadhan will vie for the Nemom seat. Additionally, T O Mohanan has been selected as the candidate for the politically significant Kannur constituency.
Internal Dissent and Resolution Efforts
The candidate selection process was not without its share of internal friction and disagreements. Earlier indications that the party might field former mayor T O Mohanan from Kannur—a known critic of former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K Sudhakaran—sparked considerable discontent. Sudhakaran had openly expressed his displeasure, even hinting at the possibility of entering the electoral fray as an Independent candidate, which threatened to create a rift within the party ranks.
However, on Thursday, Sudhakaran publicly ruled out contesting as an Independent from Kannur, firmly asserting his continued loyalty to the Congress party. Sources close to the development revealed that Sudhakaran softened his stance following decisive intervention from senior party leaders. Veteran Congress leader A K Antony played a pivotal role in defusing the crisis, while party president Mallikarjun Kharge personally reached out to the former state chief, urging restraint and unity.
Leadership Decisions and Strategic Nominations
In another key constituency, Kochi, the candidate selection process saw intense deliberation. Deepti Mary Varghese was among the prominent frontrunners for the ticket. Ultimately, the party leadership chose to back the nominee supported by V D Satheesan, the leader of the opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This decision underscores the strategic considerations and internal alignments that shape such high-stakes political nominations.
The completion of the candidate list marks a significant milestone for the Congress party as it prepares for the electoral battle in Kerala.
