Congress Veteran P Chidambaram Draws Sharp Contrast Between Cinema and Governance

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram delivered a pointed critique of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and popular film star Vijay on Saturday, using a cinematic analogy to emphasize the serious nature of political administration. Speaking during a roadshow in Sivaganga, Chidambaram remarked that "governance offers no retakes," directly referencing Vijay's background in the film industry.

"In Governance, There Are No Retakes": Chidambaram's Core Argument

"Governance is not easy. I have governed for approximately two decades, and I can confidently state it is not a simple task. In governance, there are absolutely no retakes," declared Chidambaram, who has held crucial portfolios including Home and Finance in previous Congress-led central governments.

The veteran politician elaborated on his central theme, drawing a clear distinction between the worlds of cinema and politics. "In the film industry, if a particular scene does not turn out as intended, the director can simply request another take. However, in public administration and governance, that option does not exist. Once a policy decision or administrative action is implemented, there is no opportunity for a retake. The decision stands permanently, with all its consequences," he explained.

Context: Vijay's Political Entry and Tamil Nadu Elections

Vijay, one of Tamil cinema's biggest superstars, formally launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in February 2024. The party has announced its intention to contest all 234 constituencies in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. Voting is scheduled for April 23, with the counting of votes and results declaration set for May 4.

Additional Criticism: Questioning Vijay's Political Conduct

Chidambaram further criticized Vijay for his absence from a scheduled speech at an election rally in Karaikudi on Friday. "He departed without even addressing the gathering. How can this be considered acceptable behavior in politics? The essence of politics involves communication and dialogue, does it not?" the Rajya Sabha MP questioned.

He contrasted his own approach with that of the TVK leader. "He has avoided meeting the press. He is not engaging directly with the public either. Observe my methodology: I come directly to you, the people. Having served as Home Minister and Finance Minister, I understand public service. I travel independently by car. Every time I visit, I am prepared to speak openly. I am consistently ready for any debate or discussion," Chidambaram asserted.

TVK's Explanation for the Missed Speech

According to sources within TVK, Vijay was unable to deliver his scheduled address at the Karaikudi rally due to significant logistical delays. The party chief was traveling from Madurai to Karaikudi, a distance of roughly 100 kilometers.

TVK representatives attributed the delay to "enormous crowds" along the travel route, which reportedly pushed his arrival at the venue back by nearly four hours. By the time Vijay's convoy finally reached the rally site, the official time slot permitted by local police authorities for the event had already expired. This forced the TVK leader to briefly acknowledge the waiting crowd with a wave before departing without giving his planned speech.

The exchange highlights the growing political tensions and contrasting styles as Tamil Nadu prepares for a significant electoral battle, with established political veterans facing new entrants from other fields.
