Chidambaram: BJP Plans Parliament Seat Hike in Special Session

Chidambaram Accuses BJP of Timing Parliament Expansion with State Elections

Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram has made serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, claiming it is preparing to introduce a Constitutional amendment legislation to significantly increase the number of seats in Parliament. The veteran Congress leader stated that this move is planned for the upcoming special session of Parliament scheduled from April 16 to 18.

Allegations of Strategic Timing with Election Campaigns

Speaking to reporters in Karaikudi on Saturday, Chidambaram asserted that the BJP government has deliberately scheduled this Parliament session to coincide with election periods in key states. "The BJP government planned to conduct the Parliament session when elections were scheduled for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal," he emphasized.

According to Chidambaram, sources in Delhi indicate that the government intends to table two crucial bills during this session:

Concerns About Legislative Process and Political Strategy

The former finance minister raised concerns about the legislative process required for such significant changes. "To pass these bills, a special majority is required," Chidambaram explained, referring to the constitutional requirement for amendments that affect parliamentary representation.

He suggested that the timing serves a strategic political purpose: "Since it is election time in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the MPs from these states will be busy campaigning, which will make it easier for BJP to pass the bill." This statement implies that reduced attendance from opposition MPs engaged in state election campaigns could facilitate smoother passage of the legislation.

The proposed increase to 816 constituencies would represent a substantial expansion of Parliament, potentially altering the balance of political representation across states. Such changes typically require careful deliberation and broad consensus, making the timing and circumstances of this proposed legislation particularly noteworthy according to Chidambaram's allegations.
