In a significant enforcement action under the model code of conduct, election flying squad officials in Chennai have seized a staggering 46 kilograms of gold jewellery, with an estimated market value of approximately ₹65 crore. The dramatic interception took place near the Red Hills area, highlighting the intensified surveillance measures implemented by authorities to prevent the illicit distribution of cash and gifts during the election period.
Vehicle Inspection Leads to Major Discovery
The operation unfolded in the Madhavaram assembly constituency, specifically near the Nallur toll plaza adjacent to Red Hills. Flying squad officials, acting on heightened alert, stopped and thoroughly inspected a vehicle that was travelling from Chennai towards Ponneri. During the inspection, officials uncovered a substantial cache of gold jewellery that had been carefully concealed within the vehicle.
Subsequent questioning of the individuals transporting the items revealed that the 46kg of gold jewellery belonged to a prominent and well-known chain of jewellery stores based in Chennai. The transporters claimed that they were merely taking the jewellery to a workshop for the purpose of crafting ornaments, a statement that immediately raised suspicions among the vigilant officials.
Official Seizure and Documentation Process
Acting swiftly under the powers granted by the model code of conduct, the flying squad officials confiscated the entire consignment of gold jewellery. The seized items were then transported to the office of Perumal, the election returning officer for the Madhavaram constituency. In the presence of the returning officer, employees from the jewellery store chain presented what they claimed were relevant documents pertaining to the gold.
However, due to the exceptionally large volume and high value of the jewellery involved, the election officials decided to escalate the matter. They formally informed the income tax department, transferring the case for a more detailed and comprehensive investigation. The income tax officials have now taken charge of the probe, with a primary focus on verifying the legitimacy of the jewellery's ownership and the accompanying documentation.
