CPM Leader Brinda Karat Launches Scathing Attack on Modi Government in Kochi Address
In a fiery speech delivered at a 'meet the leader' program in Kochi on Monday, veteran CPM leader Brinda Karat launched a blistering critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Karat provocatively labeled Modi's close associates as an 'A-team' comprising industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, along with the United States of America, accusing the prime minister of prioritizing their interests over national sovereignty.
Silence on International Issues and Alleged Subservience to US
Karat specifically mocked Modi for maintaining silence on critical international matters, such as the recent US attack on Iran. She asserted that by refusing to speak out, the prime minister has effectively 'handed the keys to Trump,' implying a submissive foreign policy stance that undermines India's independent voice on the global stage. This remark highlighted her broader accusation that the Modi administration is unduly influenced by American geopolitical strategies.
Rising Communal Violence and Targeting of Minorities
The CPM leader further alleged a significant increase in attacks against minority communities and tribal populations in states governed by the BJP. She emphasized that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) maintain a firm and unwavering stance against both the BJP and the forces of communalism. Karat accused the Indian National Congress of spreading a false narrative about a political 'deal' to obscure this reality, diverting attention from the alleged persecution.
FCRA Bill: A Tool Against Religious Minorities?
Karat strongly condemned the government's introduction of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) amendment bill, claiming it specifically targets minority religious groups. She explained that the proposed legislation empowers authorities to cancel and take over the licenses of institutions run by these religious organizations, potentially stifling their charitable and educational activities. She questioned why Prime Minister Modi did not address these concerns during his recent visit to Thrissur, Kerala.
Contrasting Kerala's Efforts with Central Neglect
Highlighting the efforts of the LDF government in Kerala, Karat noted that despite facing severe financial constraints, the state is actively building a township for disaster victims in Wayanad. In contrast, she criticized the Congress party for not disclosing details of funds collected for housing projects. She demanded that the prime minister clarify why the central government is denying Kerala its rightful financial allocations and accused the BJP-led Centre of systematically dismantling the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a crucial lifeline for rural communities.
Criticism of Congress and Call for Accountability
Expanding her critique to the opposition, Karat stated that the Congress has failed to fulfil its promises to the people in states like Karnataka and Telangana. She advised Rahul Gandhi to make new promises in Kerala only after delivering on commitments elsewhere. To underscore allegations of corruption, she pointed out that the Telangana revenue minister is involved in an illegal mining case, while an All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and a Congress MP from Kerala are facing investigation in a Haryana seat bribery scandal.
Karat's comprehensive address in Kochi served as a robust political indictment, positioning the CPM and LDF as the primary opposition to both the BJP's policies and the Congress's perceived failures, while advocating for Kerala's rights and social justice.
