BJP President Nitin Nabin Questions Viability of Alliance with Actor Vijay's TVK

In an exclusive interview with ANI on Thursday, BJP national president Nitin Nabin cast doubt on the practicality of a potential alliance with actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He firmly asserted that the saffron party remains steadfastly aligned with its existing ally, the AIADMK, as Tamil Nadu prepares for crucial assembly elections.

Nabin Emphasizes Full-Time Political Commitment

"I believe he (referring to Vijay) is trying politics for the first time. I wish him well, but politics requires full-time commitment," stated Nabin, who succeeded Union Health Minister JP Nadda as BJP chief in January. "It is too early to say anything about Vijay ji right now. Glamour may draw people, but stability comes only with time spent on the ground."

The former Bihar MLA, a surprise choice to lead the BJP, elaborated on the demands of political life. "In politics, you have to be fully committed. Everything depends on how much time he devotes on the ground. Why should we form an alliance with him? We are already aligned with the AIADMK," Nabin reiterated, emphasizing that the BJP's partnership with the AIADMK remains its primary focus in Tamil Nadu.

Confidence in AIADMK Alliance and Tamil Nadu Results

The 45-year-old leader expressed strong confidence in the BJP's renewed alliance with the AIADMK, led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. "The results in Tamil Nadu will surprise you," Nabin predicted. "The corruption of the DMK and its appeasement politics will get a strong response from the people. The NDA will form the government in Tamil Nadu. There are clear signs of change."

This alliance was reestablished in April last year after the two parties had parted ways ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Despite their reunion, both the BJP and AIADMK failed to secure a single seat in Tamil Nadu during those national elections, where the state sends 39 members to the Lok Sabha.

Election Context and Political Landscape

Under their current seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming assembly elections, the BJP is set to contest 27 seats in Tamil Nadu. All 234 assembly constituencies in the state will vote on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4.

Vijay, who launched TVK in February 2024, has positioned his party against both the ruling DMK, which he describes as his political rival, and the BJP, which he views as an ideological adversary. This dynamic creates a complex political triangle in Tamil Nadu as election day approaches.

Nabin's comments highlight several key aspects of the current political scenario:

  • The BJP's strategic commitment to its existing alliance with AIADMK
  • Questions about the viability of new political entrants like Vijay's TVK
  • The importance of ground-level political work versus celebrity appeal
  • Confidence in the NDA's prospects despite previous electoral setbacks
  • The evolving political dynamics in Tamil Nadu ahead of crucial elections

As Tamil Nadu approaches its assembly elections, Nabin's statements reinforce the BJP's current political strategy while raising questions about the role of new political formations in the state's complex electoral landscape.
