The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of committing constitutional blasphemy by refusing to resign after her party's dismal performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The BJP termed her decision a post-poll tantrum and a violation of democratic norms.
BJP's Strong Reaction
Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Mamata Banerjee's refusal to step down is an insult to the Constitution. She has lost the moral authority to continue as Chief Minister after her party failed to secure even a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal." Patra further added that the people of West Bengal have given a clear mandate in favor of the BJP, and Banerjee should respect their verdict.
Claims of Electoral Mandate
The BJP won 18 out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) managed to secure only 12 seats. The BJP's vote share also increased significantly compared to the 2014 elections. Party leaders argued that this outcome reflects the growing support for the BJP in the state and a rejection of the TMC's governance.
"This is a clear message from the people that they want a change. Mamata Banerjee should have the grace to resign and pave the way for fresh elections," said another BJP leader.
Mamata's Stance
Mamata Banerjee, however, has refused to step down, asserting that she still enjoys a majority in the state assembly and that the Lok Sabha results do not affect her position as Chief Minister. She accused the BJP of trying to destabilize her government through unconstitutional means and vowed to continue her fight against what she termed as the BJP's authoritarian agenda.
Political Fallout
The political slugfest between the BJP and TMC is expected to intensify in the coming days, with both parties gearing up for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. The BJP has announced plans to launch a statewide campaign to demand Banerjee's resignation, while the TMC has called for a show of strength to demonstrate its continued support among the people.
Political analysts believe that the ongoing confrontation could have significant implications for the political landscape of West Bengal, with the BJP aiming to capitalize on its Lok Sabha performance to make inroads into the state's assembly.
