The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's refusal to step down from her post following the 2026 Assembly elections, terming it as 'constitutional blasphemy' and a 'post-poll tantrum'. The opposition party's sharp reaction came after Banerjee alleged large-scale irregularities in the counting process, claiming that the mandate in nearly 100 seats 'was looted' and that counting was deliberately slowed down to demoralize her party.
BJP's Accusations
BJP leaders accused Banerjee of undermining democratic processes and disrespecting the Constitution. They argued that her refusal to accept the election results and her decision to cling to power despite apparent defeat was a direct affront to the will of the people. 'This is nothing but constitutional blasphemy. The Chief Minister is trying to subvert the democratic mandate through baseless allegations,' said a senior BJP spokesperson.
Mamata's Allegations
Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), had earlier alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was complicit in manipulating the counting process. She claimed that the slow pace of counting in several constituencies was a deliberate tactic to demoralize TMC workers and supporters. 'In nearly 100 seats, the mandate has been looted. We will not accept this,' she said in a press conference.
Political Reactions
The BJP's strong response underscores the heightened political tensions in the state. Other opposition parties have also weighed in, with some calling for an independent inquiry into the counting process. However, the ECI has denied any irregularities, stating that the counting was conducted as per established procedures.
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are on the final results of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, which will determine the future of the state's governance. The BJP has urged the Chief Minister to respect the democratic process and step down gracefully, while the TMC has vowed to challenge the results legally.
