The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday defended the Enforcement Directorate raids across Punjab and accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party of attempting to communalise the enforcement action by portraying it as a crackdown on Hindu traders. The BJP claimed that such remarks were aimed at dividing Punjab's business community and undermining the state's tradition of communal harmony.
BJP Spokesperson Condemns AAP Leaders
Punjab BJP spokesperson Sarchand Singh condemned the remarks made by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding the ED action, alleging that their statements reflected a divisive and communal mindset. He said that for the first time, an attempt was being made to classify Punjab's trading community into Hindu and Sikh traders.
"Such a narrative undermines the state's long-standing culture of religious coexistence and social unity. In Punjab, a trader is identified by enterprise, hard work, entrepreneurship and contribution to the economy, not by religion," Singh stated.
Allegations of Political Exploitation
Referring to Kejriwal's remarks about Punjab's Hindu traders, Singh alleged that the AAP leadership was willing to exploit religious identities for political gains. He maintained that Punjab's legacy had always been rooted in fraternity that transcends religious and social divisions. The BJP spokesperson further alleged that Mann's use of the term "Hindu traders" was an extension of the same approach, aimed at creating religious fault lines within the business community.
Singh argued that if the government was genuinely worried about traders, it should focus on addressing their concerns rather than politicising their identities.
Defence of ED Actions
Defending the ED's actions, Singh said the agency was a constitutional institution that should be allowed to function independently and impartially. He maintained that law-abiding citizens need not fear investigations and asserted that no individual, regardless of influence or status, was above the law. He also accused the AAP of routinely portraying actions by investigative agencies as politically motivated to weaken anti-corruption efforts.
Questions on AAP's Governance
Singh raised questions about the AAP's governance record, questioning the government's "Rangla Punjab" narrative. He claimed that industrial growth had slowed, investment sentiment remained weak, unemployment persisted, and a large number of government vacancies remained unfilled. The BJP spokesperson further alleged that traders and industrialists continued to face issues related to taxation, GST compliance pressures and administrative hurdles.
Reaffirming the BJP's commitment to Punjab's social unity and rule of law, Singh said the people of the state would reject any attempt to introduce religious divisions into public life and the business community.
