BJP and Congress Unveil Candidate Lists for Coimbatore Assembly Seats
In a significant development ahead of the April 23 assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress have officially announced their candidates for key constituencies in Coimbatore. The lists, released on Friday, reveal contrasting strategies as the parties gear up for the electoral battle in Tamil Nadu.
BJP's Experienced Choice: Vanathi Srinivasan
The BJP is fielding Vanathi Srinivasan, a 55-year-old seasoned politician, in the Coimbatore North constituency. This seat has been allotted to the BJP as part of the AIADMK-led alliance. Vanathi currently serves as the national president of the BJP women's wing and brings considerable experience to the table.
She is the sitting MLA of Coimbatore South, having contested and won the seat in the 2021 assembly elections. Her victory in 2021 was notable, as she defeated actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan. Prior to this, she had also contested in the Coimbatore South constituency in 2016, demonstrating her strong political presence in the region.
Congress's Youthful Strategy: K P Surya Prakash and V Shrinithi Mohan
In contrast, the Congress has opted for a younger approach in the two constituencies allotted to it under the DMK-led alliance. The party has named K P Surya Prakash, 27, and V Shrinithi Mohan, 37, as its candidates for Kavundampalayam and Singanallur, respectively.
K P Surya Prakash holds the position of state president of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress. His political journey includes various roles within the party, such as serving as the block in-charge of the Coimbatore Corporation Youth Congress. This nomination marks a significant step in his rising career within the Congress ranks.
V Shrinithi Mohan, appointed as the national secretary of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) in 2025, has a diverse political background. She began her career with the BJP before switching to the Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2021, where she contested from the Udumalet constituency in the same year. In 2022, she joined the Congress, and her recent appointment to the IYC highlights her growing influence within the party.
Electoral Dynamics and Alliance Implications
The candidate announcements underscore the strategic moves by both parties in the run-up to the assembly election. The BJP's selection of Vanathi Srinivasan reflects a reliance on experienced leadership to secure the Coimbatore North seat, while Congress's choice of young faces in Kavundampalayam and Singanallur signals a focus on energizing the youth vote and fostering new leadership.
These developments are set to shape the political landscape in Coimbatore, with voters eagerly watching how these candidates will campaign and address local issues. The election outcome will not only impact the individual constituencies but also influence the broader alliance dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
