BJP Candidate's Threat Against Bengal Chief Minister Ignites Major Political Controversy
The mother of a trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital in 2024 has triggered a sharp and escalating political controversy after becoming a BJP candidate. The situation intensified dramatically when a purported campaign video surfaced, capturing her making violent threats against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In response, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India, demanding immediate action.
Explosive Remarks in Purported Campaign Video
In the controversial clip, which is said to be from an interaction in the north Kolkata suburb of Sodepur late Saturday evening, the BJP's Panihati candidate is heard delivering a highly charged statement. "Just as my daughter was beaten to death after being dragged by her hair, I will grab her (CM) by her hair and spin her around. If I meet the CM, I will either put her in jail or throw her into the gutter and thrash her," she declared. These remarks have quickly gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation and sparking a fierce debate about electoral decorum.
Background of Grief and Allegations
Earlier in the same interaction, the candidate explained her motivations, stating she was "primarily fighting against the CM, who is responsible for my daughter's death at a government hospital." She further alleged that her daughter had been murdered for raising her voice against corruption within state-run medical colleges. The candidate also leveled serious accusations against Nirmal Ghosh, the current TMC MLA from Panihati, claiming he attempted to destroy evidence in her daughter's case. Additionally, she alleged that Tirthankar, Nirmal's son and her TMC rival in the constituency, had been fielded specifically to "cover up the crime."
TMC's Formal Complaint to Election Commission
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has written a detailed letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, condemning the candidate's remarks as a "serious threat to democratic values and public decorum." The letter emphasized that such language risks vitiating the electoral atmosphere and could incite violence. The party has urgently sought prompt legal and disciplinary action against the BJP candidate to uphold the integrity of the election process.
Political Reactions and Silence
As of now, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not issued any official response to the growing controversy. However, the candidate's husband has commented on the situation, stating that they were unaware of any formal complaint being filed. He described his wife's remarks as being made "in a moment of intense anger," stemming from the profound personal tragedy of their daughter's horrific death. This incident highlights the deeply emotional and politically charged environment surrounding the upcoming elections in West Bengal.
