The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of indulging in vendetta politics after an FIR was registered against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak in Punjab. The incident has sparked a fresh political row between the two parties, with the BJP demanding an explanation from the AAP leadership.
Background of the Case
Sandeep Pathak, who is also the national secretary of the AAP, was booked by the Punjab Police in connection with an alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the recent assembly elections. According to the police, Pathak was found distributing money to voters, a charge that the AAP has vehemently denied. The party claims that the FIR is politically motivated and aimed at silencing its leaders.
BJP's Allegations
The BJP has seized upon the development to criticize Kejriwal's leadership. In a press conference, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia stated, "Arvind Kejriwal has a history of using state machinery to settle political scores. This latest FIR against Sandeep Pathak is a clear example of vendetta politics. The people of Punjab have rejected the AAP's divisive agenda, and now they are trying to intimidate their own leaders."
Bhatia further alleged that the AAP government in Punjab was misusing its power to target political opponents. "The AAP had promised a new kind of politics, but they are now following the same old tactics of the Congress and the BJP. This is a betrayal of the people's trust," he added.
AAP's Response
In response to the BJP's allegations, the AAP has maintained that the FIR is baseless and an attempt to derail their anti-corruption drive. Party spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said, "Sandeep Pathak is a dedicated leader who has been working tirelessly for the welfare of the people. This FIR is a conspiracy by the BJP to stop him from exposing their corruption. We will fight this case legally and expose the real culprits."
The AAP has also accused the Punjab Police of acting under pressure from the BJP-led central government. The party has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and the immediate withdrawal of the FIR.
Political Implications
The controversy comes at a time when the AAP is trying to strengthen its foothold in Punjab after winning the state assembly elections. The party has been positioning itself as a champion of clean politics, but this incident has given ammunition to its critics. Political analysts believe that the BJP's attack on Kejriwal is part of a larger strategy to undermine the AAP's credibility before the upcoming municipal elections and the 2024 general elections.
Meanwhile, the Congress has also joined the chorus, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said, "The AAP has no moral authority to talk about corruption. They are no different from other parties. The truth will come out soon."
As the political battle intensifies, all eyes are now on the Punjab Police to see how they handle the case. The AAP has threatened to launch a nationwide protest if the FIR is not quashed. The BJP, on the other hand, has dared the AAP to face the legal process. The situation remains fluid, with both sides digging in for a long-drawn confrontation.
