Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) recorded a scorching 38.2 degrees Celsius on April 8, making it the third highest maximum temperature for the month of April since 2014, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Record-Breaking Heat
The temperature at the airport soared to 38.2°C, surpassing the previous high of 37.8°C recorded on April 24, 2023. The all-time highest April temperature at KIA was 39.1°C on April 24, 2016, followed by 38.6°C on April 30, 2016. The third highest is now 38.2°C, which occurred on April 8, 2025.
IMD officials noted that the city has been experiencing above-normal temperatures due to a combination of clear skies, reduced cloud cover, and a lack of pre-monsoon showers. The heat is expected to persist for the next few days, with temperatures likely to hover around 37-38°C.
Impact on Travelers
The soaring temperatures have affected passengers and staff at the airport. Authorities have advised travelers to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. The airport has set up additional water stations and misting fans in waiting areas to provide relief.
Flight operations remain unaffected, but ground staff are taking precautions to ensure safety during outdoor duties. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
Comparison with Previous Years
April temperatures at KIA have shown an increasing trend over the past decade. The average maximum temperature for April at the airport is around 35°C, but recent years have seen frequent spikes above 37°C. Climate experts attribute this to urbanization and the urban heat island effect.
The IMD data also reveals that Bengaluru city recorded a maximum of 36.5°C on the same day, which is 3 degrees above normal. The combination of high temperatures and low humidity has led to discomfort for residents.
As summer sets in, the IMD predicts that temperatures may continue to rise, with a possibility of crossing 40°C in some parts of the state. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
