Bengal BJP Leaders Appeal for Calm After Aide Murder

Kolkata: A day after Suvendu Adhikari's aide Chandranath Rath was shot dead, Bengal BJP seniors on Thursday appealed for calm and restraint. Calling the killing heartbreaking, a distraught Suvendu Adhikari, who reached Barasat medical college on Thursday night, said: "Politicians often depend on key people who are not involved in politics." Even while saying that Bengal had seen "politics of revenge" in the past, Adhikari said, "BJP is not jumping to conclusions immediately. Swearing-in ceremony is due in a few days. We will ensure the killers are punished. We ask everyone to maintain peace and not take law in their hands."

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar, who accompanied Adhikari at the hospital, said DGP Siddh Nath Gupta had reached the spot. According to him, police said CCTV footage could provide clues and promised a very fast investigation.

Speaking to ANI, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said, "Was this carried out to send a political message or is there some other motive behind it, or is it an act of political vendetta? The investigation is currently underway, and the truth will eventually come to light. This is no ordinary murder... They brought in a vehicle with its chassis numbers completely altered, blocked his path, and subsequently opened fire on him from a motorcycle." Bhattacharya also accused Trinamool of turning the state into "jungle raj".
