B K Hariprasad officially assumed charge as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president during a large-scale party convention held in Bengaluru on Saturday. The event marked a significant organizational shift for the Congress party in Karnataka.
OBC Leader from Billava Community Takes Helm
Hariprasad, a prominent OBC leader belonging to the Billava community, was appointed to the top state party post. His elevation comes shortly after he was re-elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council on Thursday, June 19, 2026. The convention witnessed the presence of senior Congress leaders, MLAs, and workers from across the state.
In his acceptance speech, Hariprasad emphasized unity within the party and outlined priorities for strengthening the Congress grassroots network. “We will work tirelessly to connect with every booth and ensure the party’s vision reaches the people,” he said, according to party sources.
Mega Convention Marks New Phase for State Congress
The convention, described by party officials as one of the largest in recent years, served as a platform to consolidate support ahead of upcoming local body elections. Leaders highlighted Hariprasad’s experience as a former Member of Parliament and his role in the Legislative Council.
Hariprasad replaces D K Shivakumar, who stepped down following his election as the state Congress president last year. The transition is seen as a strategic move to balance caste equations within the party, given the Billava community’s significant presence in coastal Karnataka.
Re-election to Legislative Council Precedes New Role
Hariprasad’s re-election to the Karnataka Legislative Council on June 19, 2026, with cross-party support, underscored his political stature. He secured the required votes comfortably, according to election officials. His dual role as MLC and KPCC chief is expected to bolster the party’s legislative coordination.
Party insiders indicated that Hariprasad will focus on organizational revamp and outreach programs. “He brings a wealth of experience from both the legislative and organizational fronts,” said a senior Congress functionary.
