Indian Army Unveils Phased Battle Array Formation at Republic Day Parade

In a historic display of military prowess, the Indian Army showcased its capabilities in a phased battle array format for the very first time during the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi on January 26, 2026. This groundbreaking presentation allowed the public to witness military assets arranged in the precise sequence they would appear during actual combat operations, marking a significant departure from traditional parade formations.

What is the Phased Battle Array Formation?

The tactical display recreated a battle scenario inspired by Operation Sindoor, demonstrating India's military strength through three distinct phases. According to defense experts, this formation represents how different military elements coordinate during real combat situations, providing spectators with an unprecedented glimpse into battlefield strategy and organization.

The Ministry of Defence had previously announced that the Indian Army would be represented by a mounted column of the 61 Cavalry alongside the battle array formation. The display featured seven marching contingents and an impressive array of military hardware including:

  • High Mobility Recce Vehicles (HMRV) equipped with BFSR and ATGM systems
  • ALH Dhruv Helicopters showcasing aerial capabilities
  • T-90 and Main Battle Tank Arjun representing armored strength
  • BMP-II and NAMIS-II Nag Missile Systems for mechanized warfare
  • Integrated Operational Centre (IOC) for battlefield monitoring
  • Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)
  • Light Strike Vehicles (LSV) with trailers carrying robotic mules and UGVs
  • Advanced artillery systems including Shaktiban, ATAGS, and Dhanush
  • Missile systems like URLS, Brahmos, Akash, and Barak 8
  • Drone Shakti and Glacier ATV demonstrating technological innovation

Comprehensive Military Display with Traditional Elements

The parade also featured traditional elements alongside modern military technology. An animal contingent comprising Zanskar ponies, Bactrian camels, and dogs with handlers marched past the saluting dais, representing the diverse capabilities of India's armed forces. Various regional contingents including Scouts, Rajput, Assam, JAK LI, Artillery, and Ladakh Scouts participated in the march-past, with the Bhairav contingent performing in 'Uncha Kadam taal' rhythm.

The reconnaissance element was particularly noteworthy, with the 61 Cavalry appearing in active combat uniform and showcasing assets in tactical order that mirrored real combat zones. High mobility reconnaissance vehicles displayed capabilities of Special Forces, reconnaissance troops from armored and mechanized regiments, and infantry units. These vehicles were equipped with surveillance drones and battlefield surveillance radars, along with Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) for comprehensive combat support.

Aerial and Ground Coordination in Battle Scenario

The battlefield scenario presentation included coordinated displays of aerial assets such as helicopters and aircraft, followed by armored columns featuring T-90 and MBT Arjun tanks. Mechanized columns of BMP II and NAMIS II Nag missile systems demonstrated combined arms operations, while the Integrated Operational Centre illustrated how modern battles are monitored using various surveillance equipment.

The display progressed to showcase unmanned ground vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and light strike vehicles, with robotic mules and logistics vehicles supporting these columns. The inclusion of robotic dogs alongside traditional Bactrian camels and Zanskar ponies highlighted the blend of cutting-edge technology and time-tested military methods.

Finally, the parade featured infantry columns and marked the debut appearance of the Bhairav light commando battalion, adding another dimension to this comprehensive demonstration of India's military capabilities. This phased battle array formation not only celebrated Republic Day but also served as an educational display of how modern military operations are structured and executed.
