Governor Arlekar Stresses Tribal Welfare as Key to Viksit Bharat Goal
In Thiruvananthapuram, Governor Rajendra Arlekar declared that the comprehensive welfare of tribal communities and the integrated development of tribal regions are urgent necessities to realize the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). He made these remarks while inaugurating the All India Denotified and Nomadic Tribal Development Council meeting on Saturday.
Historical Divisions and Collective Strength
Arlekar described the gathering as a significant and timely initiative, providing a vital platform to address the challenges faced by denotified and nomadic tribes. "Tribals cannot be neglected any longer; it is time to introspect what we can do collectively," he asserted. He pointed to historical lessons, noting that society weakens when divided, making it easier to rule. During the colonial era, divisions were fostered along caste, tribal, and religious lines, which eroded collective strength.
Arlekar emphasized that society must remain vigilant about these historical facts and learn from them. "Though we had opportunities to correct this malaise soon after Independence, we were not fully successful. Of late, there is a greater awareness, which has initiated a process of unification," he added.
Inclusion and Development of Marginalized Sections
The Governor highlighted that over 256 tribes were excluded from scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, and OBC categories, depriving them of rightful benefits for decades. He praised the Council's efforts in identifying these communities and incorporating them into government welfare schemes.
"If we truly seek the development of our nation, we must ensure the uplift of the most marginalized sections. The progress of the country depends on the development of the last person in society," Arlekar stated. He concluded that the dream of Viksit Bharat can only be achieved when all citizens, including the most disadvantaged, reap the benefits of development.
