BJP Excludes Annamalai from Tamil Nadu Candidate List Amid Alliance Dynamics
Annamalai Omitted from BJP's Tamil Nadu Candidate List

BJP's Candidate List for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections Omits Former State Chief Annamalai

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections on Friday, conspicuously excluding former state president K Annamalai. This development follows weeks of speculation about internal party dynamics and alliance negotiations.

Official Response and Annamalai's Reaction

When questioned about Annamalai's exclusion, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendra stated that the "decision was taken by the party high command." This move comes shortly after visible tensions emerged between Annamalai and the party leadership, highlighted by his absence during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Coimbatore airport.

Despite his omission from the candidate list, Annamalai quickly issued a statement expressing support for the party's nominees. "Hearty congratulations to all the BJP winning candidates announced for the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections," he said. "They carry the support of every brother & sister of TN who is tired of corruption, complacency, and the DMK's betrayal."

Annamalai further pledged to campaign actively for all NDA candidates, declaring, "I as a Karyakarta will stand shoulder to shoulder & campaign for all our winning BJP & other NDA candidates, with the aim of the NDA winning 210 seats in the upcoming assembly elections."

Background to Annamalai's Marginalization

Annamalai's sidelining appears to be part of a broader political strategy. Approximately one year before the assembly elections, the BJP removed him as state president, a decision widely interpreted as an effort to repair relations with the AIADMK led by Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). Reports indicate that Palaniswami had made Annamalai's removal a precondition for alliance talks, citing Annamalai's aggressive criticism of AIADMK.

Following this organizational change, Union Home Minister Amit Shah commented that "Annamalai's organizational skills will be leveraged within party's national framework." The NDA alliance for the upcoming polls has been finalized with the following seat distribution:

  • AIADMK: 178 seats
  • BJP: 27 seats
  • PMK faction led by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss: 18 seats
  • Amma Makkal Munnetra Katchi led by TTV Dhinakaran: 11 seats

Further setbacks for Annamalai occurred on February 3, 2026, when he resigned as election in-charge for six assembly constituencies—Karaikudi, Singanallur, Srivaikuntam, Virugambakkam, Madurai (South), and Padmanabhapuram—citing his father's ill health. Sources suggest he was dissatisfied with being assigned only six of the 234 assembly seats.

Additionally, Annamalai was not included in the Tamil Nadu BJP's Legislative Assembly election management committee formed on February 11, which is headed by state chief Nainar Nagenthran with former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan as coordinator.

Caste Dynamics and Political Calculations

Caste considerations have significantly influenced these developments. Both Annamalai and EPS belong to the Gounder community, which constitutes approximately 5% to 7% of Tamil Nadu's population and is concentrated in western regions like Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Salem.

Annamalai's rise as a potential chief ministerial candidate was viewed by AIADMK as a direct challenge to EPS's leadership within the alliance. Since Jayalalithaa's death, EPS has consolidated control over AIADMK, appointing numerous Gounder leaders to key positions. Annamalai's prominence threatened to split the Gounder vote and undermine EPS's authority.

Annamalai's Tenure as BJP State President

During his time as BJP state chief, Annamalai emerged as a charismatic leader who significantly raised the party's profile in Tamil Nadu. His tenure was marked by several controversial and attention-grabbing actions:

  1. In December 2024, he publicly flogged himself six times to protest against the DMK following a rape case at Anna University.
  2. In February 2025, he threatened to dismantle the DMK headquarters "brick by brick."
  3. He launched sharp critiques of Dravidian parties and icons, including EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai, and even described J Jayalalithaa as a "Hindutva" leader.
  4. He released the "DMK Files" alleging corruption against Chief Minister MK Stalin, his son Udhayanidhi Stalin, and other DMK leaders.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Annamalai undertook the ambitious 'En Mann, En Makkal' yatra, covering all 234 assembly constituencies to mobilize party workers. Although the BJP failed to win any of the 23 seats it contested, the party claimed its vote share increased from 3.7% in 2019 to 11% in 2024.

The exclusion of Annamalai from the candidate list represents a significant shift in BJP's Tamil Nadu strategy, prioritizing alliance stability with AIADMK over the continued prominence of its former state president who had dramatically increased the party's visibility in the state.
