Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand horticulture cultivation across 50 lakh acres in the state. The announcement was made on 24 April 2026, outlining a strategy to transform Rayalaseema into a major horticulture hub through a cluster-based development model.
Cluster-Based Development Model
The chief minister emphasized the need for a cluster-based approach to boost horticulture production. Under this model, specific regions will be developed as specialized clusters for different horticulture crops, ensuring efficient use of resources and better market linkages. The plan aims to increase farmer incomes and create employment opportunities in rural areas.
Focus on Cocoa City
A key highlight of the announcement is the establishment of a dedicated cocoa city. This facility will be designed to process cocoa beans and produce value-added products such as chocolate and cocoa powder. The cocoa city is expected to attract investments, generate jobs, and position Andhra Pradesh as a leading cocoa processing hub in India.
The expansion to 50 lakh acres will cover a wide range of horticulture crops, including fruits, vegetables, spices, and flowers. The government will provide support through subsidies, training, and infrastructure development. Special attention will be given to irrigation facilities and cold storage chains to reduce post-harvest losses.
Rayalaseema, known for its dry climate, will be transformed using modern farming techniques and water conservation methods. The cluster model will leverage the region's strengths and address challenges such as water scarcity and soil degradation.
The plan is part of the state's broader agricultural policy to double farmers' income by 2030. Officials are optimistic that the initiative will not only boost the rural economy but also enhance food security and promote sustainable farming practices.
