ECI Names Anandita Mitra as Punjab's New Chief Electoral Officer

The Election Commission of India has made a significant appointment. On Thursday, the ECI selected Anandita Mitra as the new Chief Electoral Officer for Punjab. She replaces Sibin C, who is moving to a central deputation role.

Official Communication and Immediate Action

Rahul Sharma, the Principal Secretary of the ECI, sent a formal letter to K A P Sinha, the Chief Secretary of Punjab. Dated January 15, this communication directed the state government to ensure Mitra assumes her duties immediately. The ECI requires confirmation of this within one week.

A copy of the official notification was also forwarded to Sinha. The Commission requested that this appointment be republished in the state gazette for public record.

Selection Process and Candidate Background

The Punjab Government had previously submitted a panel of three IAS officers for consideration. Anandita Mitra emerged as the chosen candidate from this shortlist.

Mitra is a 2007-batch Indian Administrative Service officer. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from Guru Ghasidas University in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.

Distinguished Career and Achievements

Anandita Mitra cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2006, with results announced in 2007. She secured an impressive All India Rank 8. Notably, she topped the list among all women candidates that year.

Her career includes several key positions in Punjab and on deputation. From August 2021 to August 2024, she served as the Municipal Commissioner of Chandigarh. During this tenure, she also held additional roles.

  • Mitra focused on Swachh Bharat initiatives.
  • She worked on welfare programs for safai workers.
  • Urban development projects were a key part of her portfolio.

Currently, Mitra serves as the Administrative Secretary for Higher Education and Languages in the Punjab Government. She also holds additional responsibility for School Education. Furthermore, she manages the role of Managing Director for the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board.

This appointment brings a seasoned administrator to oversee electoral processes in Punjab. Her diverse experience in governance and public service is expected to strengthen the election machinery in the state.
