Amit Shah Vows to Fulfill Dream of Sonar Bangla, Announces Suvendu as Bengal CM Candidate for 2026
Amit Shah Announces Suvendu as Bengal CM Face for 2026 Polls

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government will work tirelessly to fulfill the dream of a 'Sonar Bangla' (Golden Bengal). He made the remarks while announcing Suvendu Adhikari as the party's chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.

Shah's Vision for Bengal

Speaking at a mega rally in Kolkata, Shah said, "The people of Bengal have suffered due to the misrule of the Trinamool Congress. The BJP is committed to bringing development and prosperity to the state. We will work to fulfill the dream of Sonar Bangla, a Bengal that is free from corruption, violence, and unemployment."

He further added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP has already transformed the country's economy and infrastructure, and similar progress will be replicated in West Bengal.

Announcement of CM Candidate

Shah officially named Suvendu Adhikari, a former Trinamool Congress leader who joined the BJP in 2020, as the party's face for the 2026 elections. "Suvendu Adhikari is a leader who understands the pulse of Bengal. He will lead the BJP to victory and become the next chief minister," Shah declared.

Adhikari, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, thanked the party leadership for the trust reposed in him. "I am grateful to Amit Shah ji and Narendra Modi ji for this responsibility. We will work day and night to build a new Bengal," he said.

BJP's Strategy for Bengal

The announcement is part of the BJP's strategy to strengthen its foothold in West Bengal, which has been ruled by the Trinamool Congress since 2011. The party has been aggressively campaigning in the state, focusing on issues like corruption, alleged atrocities against women, and political violence.

Shah also criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government, accusing it of failing to ensure law and order and promoting a culture of appeasement. "The people of Bengal are ready for a change. They want a government that works for their welfare, not for personal gains," he said.

Reactions from Political Rivals

The Trinamool Congress dismissed Shah's announcement as a desperate attempt by the BJP to stay relevant in Bengal. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The people of Bengal have rejected the BJP in the past and will do so again. Mamata Banerjee is the undisputed leader of the state."

Other opposition parties, including the Left Front and Congress, also criticized the BJP's move, calling it a publicity stunt ahead of the elections.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With the 2026 assembly elections still over two years away, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to build momentum in Bengal. The party has already launched several outreach programs, including 'Parivartan Yatra' and 'Griha Sampark Abhiyan', to connect with voters at the grassroots level.

Political analysts believe that the early announcement of a CM candidate could give the BJP an edge, as it projects clarity and confidence. However, the party will need to overcome significant challenges, including internal factionalism and the strong grassroots presence of the Trinamool Congress.

As the political battle heats up, all eyes will be on Bengal, which is set to witness one of the most fiercely contested elections in its history.
