AIADMK Seat Share: BJP Lotus Symbol Expands in Tamil Nadu Polls

AIADMK Finalizes Seat Allocation with Allies, BJP's Lotus Symbol Emerges as Key Player

In a significant development for the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections, the AIADMK on Tuesday concluded seat-sharing talks with several alliance partners, allocating five seats to G K Vasan's Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) and one seat each to K C Thirumaran's South India Forward Bloc and John Pandian's Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam. This move marks a crucial step in consolidating the opposition front against the ruling DMK.

Seat Distribution and Symbol Strategy Unveiled

Following the discussions, G K Vasan confirmed that his party has been allotted the constituencies of Oddanchaithram, Ranipet, Kiliyur, Erode West, and Kumbakonam. In a notable shift, Vasan announced that TMC candidates will contest on the BJP's 'Lotus' symbol, a decision driven by practical considerations. "There were some issues in getting the Cycle symbol allotted to us. So we decided to go with a popular symbol. Since I am directly aligned with BJP in NDA, I chose to contest in Lotus Symbol," Vasan explained to reporters.

Similarly, K C Thirumaran stated that his party will also use the BJP symbol for its lone allocated seat, reinforcing the growing influence of the Lotus in the state's electoral landscape. This announcement came after an hour-long meeting between BJP Tamil Nadu in-charge Piyush Goyal and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at the latter's residence in Chennai, before Goyal returned to Delhi.

BJP's Expanding Footprint in Tamil Nadu

With these allocations, the total number of candidates contesting on the Lotus symbol has now risen to 33, positioning it as the third-largest symbol in Tamil Nadu after the DMK's Rising Sun and AIADMK's Two Leaves. Of these 33 candidates, 27 will be from the BJP itself, highlighting the party's assertive role in the alliance. This development underscores BJP's emergence as the second-largest constituent within the AIADMK-led front, followed by Anbumani Ramadoss's PMK and T T V Dhinakaran's AMMK.

The seat-sharing process had seen earlier finalizations with BJP, PMK, and AMMK on Monday, but TMC was initially left out due to disagreements over seat numbers. The resolution of this issue has now streamlined the alliance's preparations. Sources close to the talks indicate that negotiations with other parties, including Puratchi Bharatham's Poovai Jaganmurthy, Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Katchi's Porkodi Armstrong, Puthiya Needhi Katchi's A C Shanmugam, and Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi's T R Paarivendhar, are still ongoing. Notably, Shanmugam is likely to secure two seats and has expressed willingness to field candidates under the BJP symbol, which could further boost the Lotus's tally.

Campaign Momentum and Future Plans

Earlier in the day, Edappadi K Palaniswami informed reporters that the seat-sharing talks and candidate list would be finalized and released within the next two days. He is scheduled to kick-start his election campaign in the Mylapore constituency on Wednesday, aiming to capitalize on the momentum generated by the swift seat-sharing exercise and the recent release of the AIADMK manifesto. This strategic move is designed to galvanize support and present a united front ahead of the polls.

The increasing adoption of the BJP's Lotus symbol by alliance partners reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the opposition, as parties seek to leverage the symbol's recognition and appeal among voters. As the election season heats up, these developments are poised to shape the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, with the AIADMK-led bloc positioning itself as a formidable challenger to the incumbent DMK government.
