65% of New Bengal MLAs Face Criminal Cases; 61% Crorepatis

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 65% of newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in West Bengal have criminal cases registered against them. The analysis also reveals that 61% of these MLAs are crorepatis, meaning they possess assets worth over one crore rupees.

Serious Offenses Among Winners

The ADR report highlights that among the serious offenses, 14 winning candidates have declared cases related to murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, 54 MLAs face charges of attempt to murder. These figures underscore the prevalence of criminal backgrounds among elected representatives in the state.

Financial Background of MLAs

On the financial front, the report indicates that a significant majority of the newly elected MLAs are crorepatis. This trend raises questions about the influence of wealth in elections and the representation of ordinary citizens. The ADR has called for greater transparency and stricter scrutiny of candidates' backgrounds.
