Yusuf Pathan's Father-in-Law Arrested in Mumbai Road Rage Assault Case
MUMBAI: The father-in-law of former Indian cricketer and Trinamool Congress MP Yusuf Pathan was arrested on Monday, along with his son and a relative, for allegedly assaulting a man and his family members in the Byculla area of Mumbai. The incident occurred two days earlier following a minor road altercation involving splashed water.
Road Rage Incident Escalates into Violent Attack
According to Byculla police, the conflict began on Saturday around 9 PM when local resident Yusuf Khan (30) was driving home. His vehicle reportedly hit a puddle on the road, splashing water on Shoaib Khan (35), a relative of Yusuf Pathan's family. Yusuf Khan immediately stopped his car and apologized, but Shoaib allegedly responded with verbal abuse and smashed the car's windshield using a bamboo stick. Shoaib then physically assaulted Yusuf Khan, causing injuries.
After returning home, Yusuf Khan's family members advised him to report the incident to the police. While en route to the police station, they encountered Khalid Khan alias Makaliq, who is Yusuf Pathan's father-in-law. Khalid, along with his son Umarshad Khan (35), Shoaib, and another accused named Shehbaz Pathan, initiated an argument that quickly turned violent.
Violent Assault with Weapons Leaves Multiple Injured
Police stated that Khalid, Umarshad, Shoaib, and Shehbaz attacked Yusuf Khan and his relatives using bamboo sticks and a baseball bat. The assault resulted in serious injuries to multiple family members. Yusuf Khan's brother-in-law, Salman, sustained a fracture to his hand, while an uncle, Zaki Ahmed, suffered significant injuries requiring medical attention.
Following the attack, police arrested Khalid Khan, Umarshad Khan, and Shoaib Khan. Shehbaz Pathan remains at large and is currently being sought by authorities. The three arrested individuals were charged with assault and causing grievous hurt. They were produced before a court and remanded into judicial custody until May 2.
Legal Proceedings and Defense Arguments
Defense counsel Dayanand Dere argued that the incident was a minor altercation where both parties assaulted each other, claiming police presented only one side of the story. "The complainant as well as my clients both assaulted each other, but police took their side and presented the case as if my clients were at fault. Khalid is a senior citizen and he, too, has not been spared," Dere told reporters.
Later in the evening, police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Yusuf Khan based on a cross-complaint from the accused party. The prosecution opposed granting bail to the arrested individuals, arguing that custodial interrogation is necessary to trace the remaining accused, verify criminal backgrounds, and prevent evidence tampering.
Evidence and Investigation Details
Police investigation relied heavily on CCTV footage from the area, witness statements, and seized weapons including bamboo sticks and a baseball bat. Authorities informed the court that the accused were clearly identified in the CCTV recordings and by multiple witnesses.
Complainant's lawyer Pratap Nimbalkar emphasized the seriousness of the injuries sustained by his clients and argued against granting bail to the accused. The case continues to develop as police work to apprehend Shehbaz Pathan and complete their investigation.
