Woman attempts self-immolation over missing daughter in Coimbatore

Desperate Plea for Help Turns Dangerous

A 42-year-old woman, identified as C Ambika, created a scene of high drama and desperation outside the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner's office on Friday. In a shocking act of protest, she poured kerosene on herself and attempted to set herself on fire. Her desperate demand was a single, agonizing plea: she wanted the police to intensify their efforts and trace her 19-year-old daughter, who had been missing for two weeks.

The Rescue and Immediate Aftermath

Quick-thinking police personnel stationed at the commissioner's office acted swiftly to prevent a tragedy. They managed to rescue Ambika before she could inflict severe harm upon herself. Following the incident, she was taken to the office of the District Superintendent of Police for questioning to understand the motives behind her extreme action. It was during this interaction that the heartbreaking details of her daughter's disappearance came to light.

The Investigation and Startling Revelation

Ambika, a resident of Puthumuthu Nagar near Thudiyalur, revealed that her daughter was a student at a private college in Coimbatore. The young woman was last seen on October 20 after she visited her maternal grandmother's house in Karamadai. Concerned by her absence, the family officially lodged a missing person complaint with the Karamadai police on October 22.

The police promptly registered a case and launched an investigation. Their preliminary findings, however, uncovered a different narrative. The investigation revealed that the missing daughter was in a relationship with a 27-year-old man named Sanjay, who is reportedly a distant relative. The young woman had expressed her desire to marry Sanjay, but her parents, including Ambika, had refused to accept their relationship.

It was subsequently established that following the parental refusal, the daughter had willingly eloped with Sanjay. Sanjay himself had informed both sets of parents and relatives that the two were together and safe.

After the incident at the police office, Ambika was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for a thorough medical examination and to receive necessary counselling to cope with the immense emotional distress.
