A shocking incident of domestic violence unfolded in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old woman for allegedly attempting to murder her husband by setting him on fire. The victim, a 39-year-old man, sustained severe burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Marital Dispute Turns Violent
The couple, identified as N Prakash (39) and P Ramanamani (34), hailed from Keezhasinthamani. They had been married for approximately six years and did not have any children. The police investigation revealed that the tension stemmed from a financial issue. Prakash had mortgaged his wife's jewellery to secure funds for renting a house. In the subsequent months, Ramanamani persistently asked her husband to retrieve her pledged jewels, which became a recurring point of contention.
The Night of the Attack
The situation reached a boiling point on Saturday night. According to the statement Prakash later gave to the police, a heated argument erupted. Ramanamani allegedly verbally abused Prakash and his family members. Enraged, Prakash responded by physically assaulting her. Later, as Prakash was sitting at the doorstep of their home, an infuriated Ramanamani is accused of pouring kerosene on him and igniting it. Prakash suffered 40% burn injuries in the attack.
Arrest and Legal Action
Prakash's cries of pain alerted neighbours, who rushed him to the Trichy General Hospital for urgent medical care. On Sunday, the Fort Station police formally registered a case and arrested Ramanamani. She has been charged under sections 118(2) and 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to assault with dangerous weapons and attempt to murder. Following her arrest, she was presented before a magistrate, who recorded Prakash's declaration, and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody. The police have stated that the investigation into the case is ongoing.
