A joyous wedding celebration in the spiritual town of Bodh Gaya took a shockingly violent turn, transforming from a sacred union into a scene of chaos, all reportedly triggered by a shortage of a popular Indian sweet. What was meant to be a day of happiness for families from Gaya district ended with police intervention and a dowry case, leaving the marriage itself in tatters.
From Garland Exchange to Chair-Throwing Melee
The incident occurred on November 29 at a hotel in the Bakraur area of Bodh Gaya. The wedding was between Pawan Kumar, son of Mahendra Prasad from Hathiyawan village, and Kavita Kumari, daughter of Suresh Prasad from Atri. Initial proceedings, including the groom's procession and the garland exchange, were completed peacefully, giving no hint of the drama to come.
The trouble began when guests moved to the dinner reception. To their dismay, they discovered that the rasgullas had run out. This seemingly minor dessert shortage acted as a catalyst, sparking immediate and intense anger among the attendees. The situation escalated rapidly, with guests trading punches, pushing each other, and even wielding red plastic chairs as improvised weapons. CCTV footage from the venue captured the banquet area turning into a full-blown battleground, with plates and glasses flying through the air.
Contradictory Claims: Dessert Crisis vs Dowry Demand
In the aftermath, the two families presented starkly different accounts of what caused the violent outburst. The bride's father, Suresh Prasad, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Bodh Gaya police station, alleging a dowry demand was the root cause. "Wedding rituals were underway. Meanwhile, the groom’s side started demanding an additional Rs 2 lakh as dowry, which we opposed. After this, the groom’s side started beating us, in which several people from our side were injured," he stated.
The groom's family, however, firmly denied these allegations. They insisted the conflict was solely due to the missing rasgullas. Mahendra Prasad, the groom's father, claimed, "The dispute over the shortage of rasgullas escalated so much that the girl’s side broke off the wedding. They are alleging that additional dowry demands were being made, which is false." He added that his family still wishes for the marriage to proceed with the same bride, but the other side is unwilling.
Aftermath and Police Investigation
The wedding was abruptly called off following the brawl. The video of the fight went viral on social media on Wednesday evening, bringing the incident to widespread public attention. Both families have filed cross-complaints at the Bodh Gaya police station.
Police authorities confirmed that they are questioning members from both parties and that a thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the precise sequence of events and the true cause of the conflict. The case now intertwines allegations of a violent public disturbance with the serious legal issue of dowry demand, making the police probe particularly critical.
This bizarre incident serves as a grim reminder of how social celebrations can sometimes unravel over unexpected triggers, leading to long-lasting legal and personal consequences.
