The Gurugram police have successfully arrested a wanted criminal who carried a bounty of Rs 5,000 on his head following a brief encounter in the early hours of Wednesday. The accused sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the exchange of fire with law enforcement personnel and has been admitted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Details of the Operation

According to a statement released by the Gurugram police, the Crime Branch team of Palam Vihar received intelligence on Tuesday night that a suspect wanted in a kidnapping-for-ransom case registered at the Udyog Vihar police station was traveling on a motorcycle while carrying an illegal weapon. The suspect was reportedly moving from Pataudi Road toward Sector 93.

Acting on this tip-off, the police team established a checkpoint on the Pataudi Road–Sector 93 stretch at around 3 am on Wednesday and lay in wait for the suspect to arrive.

Approximately 40 minutes later, a motorcycle carrying a single individual was spotted approaching the checkpoint. As the police attempted to block the vehicle's path, the rider realized he was surrounded and attempted to turn back and flee. In the process, the motorcycle skidded and fell, and the suspect opened fire while trying to escape. One of the bullets struck a police officer's bulletproof jacket, but the officer remained unharmed. Despite repeated warnings from the police to surrender, the suspect continued firing. In self-defense, after firing warning shots, the police returned fire. One bullet hit the suspect in his left leg, causing him to fall to the ground. He was then apprehended by the police team.

Identity of the Accused

The accused has been identified as Nitin, also known as Chhota, aged 23, a resident of Maraut village in Jhajjar district, Haryana. A case has been registered against him at the Sector 10 police station under the relevant legal provisions. A police spokesperson confirmed that a total of seven rounds were fired during the encounter—four by the accused and three by the police. The police recovered the motorcycle used in the crime, a pistol, and spent cartridge cases from the scene.

Prior Criminal Record

A senior police officer revealed that the accused was wanted in a kidnapping-for-ransom case registered at the Udyog Vihar police station, and a reward of Rs 5,000 had been announced for his arrest. Preliminary investigations have indicated that the motorcycle recovered from the suspect had been stolen from the Palam Vihar police station area.

Police records show that the accused is involved in as many as 17 criminal cases in Delhi and Haryana. These cases include offenses related to ransom demands, dacoity, murder, violations of the Arms Act, and other serious crimes.
