Vedanta Power Plant Blast: FIR Filed Against Chairman Anil Agarwal and Plant Head
In a significant development following the tragic April 14 explosion at Vedanta's power plant in Chhattisgarh, police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections pertaining to causing death by negligence and negligent conduct with machinery. The FIR names eight to ten individuals, including Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal and plant head Devendra Patel, as confirmed by Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur in a statement to PTI.
Technical Investigation Points to Fuel Accumulation as Cause
Preliminary technical investigations into the devastating blast have revealed that excessive fuel accumulation inside the boiler furnace led to a dangerous pressure build-up, ultimately triggering the explosion. This finding has been corroborated by a detailed report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Sakti, which conclusively identified fuel accumulation and the resultant excessive pressure as the primary causes of the catastrophic incident.
Death Toll Climbs to 21 as Worker Succumbs to Injuries
The human cost of the explosion continues to mount, with officials announcing on Friday that the death toll has risen to 21. A worker identified as Kismat Ali, hailing from Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, tragically passed away at a private hospital in Raipur on Thursday night. According to police reports, the explosion occurred in a steel tube that carries high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine at the power plant located in Singhitarai village.
The sequence of fatalities is heartbreaking: four workers died instantly at the scene, nine succumbed to their injuries shortly after the incident, and another seven lost their lives in hospitals on April 15. The deceased represent a cross-section of India's labor force, with six laborers from West Bengal, five from Chhattisgarh, three each from Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, and two each from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
Legal and Safety Implications Under Scrutiny
The filing of the FIR marks a critical step in the legal process, holding senior management accountable under charges of negligence. This case highlights severe safety lapses in industrial operations, raising urgent questions about compliance with safety protocols and machinery maintenance standards in power plants across the region. The involvement of high-profile figures like Anil Agarwal underscores the potential for corporate liability in industrial accidents.
As investigations proceed, authorities are expected to delve deeper into the operational failures that led to the fuel accumulation. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for stringent safety measures and regular inspections in high-risk industrial environments to prevent such tragedies in the future.
