In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Vashi police in Navi Mumbai have made a major seizure of hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 13 crore. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals, who are now facing charges under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. An FIR has been officially registered, marking a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug activities in the region.
Tip-Off Leads to Arrests Near Vashi Railway Station
The breakthrough came following a precise tip-off received by beat marshal police constables Rahul Bhoi and Ashok Shinde during their patrol duty on Wednesday night. Senior Inspector Shashikant Chandekar of Vashi police station provided details, stating that the information indicated drug suppliers would arrive near Vashi railway station in a four-wheeler around 9 am the next day to conduct a sale. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the police team set up surveillance and successfully intercepted the vehicle as planned.
Accused Identified and Remanded to Police Custody
The arrested individuals have been identified as Shyam Shivkumar Vanwani, aged 45 and a resident of Ulhasnagar, along with Sandeep Dilip Patil, 35, and Aniket Sunil Telangi, 27, both hailing from Pune. Following their apprehension, they were presented before a court, which remanded them to police custody for a period of four days to facilitate further investigation into the case. This custody period will allow authorities to delve deeper into the network and connections involved in the drug trade.
Additional Seizures and Ongoing Investigation
In addition to the substantial haul of hydroponic weed, the police also confiscated the car used by the accused, their mobile phones, and Rs 28,000 in cash found in their possession. These items are expected to provide critical evidence as the investigation progresses. The seizure underscores the sophisticated methods employed by traffickers, with hydroponic cultivation representing a modern and potent form of cannabis production that poses new challenges for law enforcement.
The Vashi police have emphasized their commitment to intensifying efforts against drug peddling in Navi Mumbai, urging the public to report any suspicious activities. This case highlights the effectiveness of community tips and proactive policing in tackling organized crime, with authorities vowing to continue such operations to ensure public safety and curb the spread of illicit substances in the area.
