A potentially catastrophic railway accident was narrowly avoided in Kerala on Tuesday night, thanks to the sharp vigilance of a Vande Bharat Express driver. The high-speed train was moments away from colliding with an abandoned autorickshaw that had encroached onto the tracks near a small halt station.
Close Call on the Tracks: The Incident Unfolds
The incident occurred around 10:10 PM on Tuesday in the Varkala–Kadakkavur section. Train No. 20633, the Vande Bharat Express running from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram Central, was approaching Akathumuri Halt station when the loco pilot made a startling discovery. An autorickshaw was stranded directly on the down line, posing an imminent danger to the train and its passengers.
Acting with remarkable presence of mind, the driver immediately slammed the emergency brakes. The powerful braking system of the premium train brought it to a halt just in time, preventing a high-speed impact. Preliminary reports indicated the auto was found completely abandoned, with no sign of its driver or any passengers at the remote spot.
Swift Response and Investigation
Following the emergency stop, a multi-agency response swung into action. Teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the engineering department, and local police rushed to the location. Their priority was to clear the obstruction and ensure the track's safety. Television footage from the scene later showed the damaged three-wheeler lying across the rails.
After thorough safety checks were completed, the Vande Bharat Express was able to resume its journey at 11:15 PM. Despite the unexpected and tense interruption of over an hour, the train managed to reach its final destination, Thiruvananthapuram Central, at 11:50 PM. Railway authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among passengers, railway staff, or the public.
Driver Apprehended, Services Restored
In a subsequent development, the RPF tracked down and took into custody the autorickshaw driver, identified as Sudhi. Officials suspect he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, which led to the vehicle being left in such a perilous position. The prompt removal of the vehicle allowed normal train services on the section to be restored shortly after the express train departed.
Railway authorities have lauded the loco pilot's prompt response, stating it prevented what could have escalated into a serious and tragic accident. The event highlights the critical importance of alertness and quick decision-making by train operators, especially on sections where road and rail crossings are in close proximity.
