UP Police Climbs to Third Position in Blocking Cyber Fraud Funds Nationally
In a significant achievement for law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh, the state police has secured the third position in the country for blocking funds in cyber defrauded accounts. This marks a remarkable improvement from its previous standing at 24th place on this crucial parameter.
Enhanced Infrastructure Drives Performance Improvement
Officials revealed on Wednesday that the Uttar Pradesh Police now ranks behind only Dadar Nagar Haveli and Haryana in terms of lien percentage for cyber fraud cases. The dramatic improvement in performance can be attributed to strategic infrastructure enhancements implemented over the past year.
Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna explained to mediapersons that earlier operational challenges had been addressed through systematic upgrades. "Initially, we were operating a 20-seater call center at the UP-112 Headquarters, which resulted in many calls going unanswered," Krishna stated.
Lucknow Call Center Expansion Boosts Capacity
The turning point came in July last year when authorities inaugurated an expanded 30-seater call center in Lucknow. This facility has significantly increased the call attendance rate and improved response times to cyber fraud complaints.
"The center currently handles approximately 5,000 calls daily, and we are adding 30 more seats shortly," DGP Krishna announced. "This expansion will boost our daily call-handling capacity from 5,000 to an impressive 9,000 calls."
Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre: A Game-Changer
At the heart of this operational success is the establishment of a specialized Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) within the call center infrastructure. This innovative setup features representatives from 13 major banks who work alongside police personnel to freeze accounts in real-time when financial fraud is detected.
Cyber Crime unit officials elaborated on the streamlined process: "Complaints involving substantial amounts and pending cases related to 'Send to Intermediaries' transactions receive immediate attention at headquarters level. Our call center then coordinates directly with banks to ensure swift freezing of fraudulent accounts."
Strategic Focus on Cybercrime Prevention
The improved performance aligns with broader strategic initiatives undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Police. Following specific instructions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, DGP Krishna identified ten major focus areas for the department, with prevention and control of cybercrime featuring prominently among these priorities.
The establishment of the CFMC represents a proactive approach to combating digital financial crimes, creating a collaborative environment where law enforcement and banking institutions work in tandem to protect citizens from cyber fraud.
This achievement demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investment and strategic planning can yield measurable improvements in law enforcement effectiveness, particularly in addressing the growing challenge of cyber-enabled financial crimes that affect citizens across the state.
